LCSW supervision hours: what to record before you start
The questions to settle before relying on clinical work or supervision toward a social work license.

The short answer
Start with your jurisdiction's clinical social work requirements. Confirm the eligible training phase, supervisor, setting, and any required approval before relying on the hours. Record clinical work and supervision separately, with enough relationship history to support later verification.
Begin with the state and license you intend to pursue
“LCSW supervision hours” does not identify one national requirement. The Association of Social Work Boards explains that requirements vary by jurisdiction and that independent or clinical licensure includes supervised practice. Start with the current requirements for the exact license you intend to seek.
Create a short reference sheet with the board's official page, required forms, and the date you checked them. Write down unresolved questions separately. A colleague's experience can help you find questions, but it should not replace the rule source for your own route.
Identify the training phase that can qualify
Separate MSW placement experience from postdegree work. Do not move earlier placement hours into a postdegree total simply because the activities look similar. Check the relevant start conditions and keep dates precise enough to show when your education and experience phases changed.
For example, New York's LCSW Experience Requirements describe at least three years of post-MSW supervised experience in diagnosis, psychotherapy, and assessment-based treatment planning, with qualifying setting and supervisor conditions. Read the full requirements for that route. Those conditions apply to New York, not to every state.
Confirm the supervisor, setting, and approvals
Before relying on a proposed arrangement, check the supervisor qualifications required by your jurisdiction and whether the planned setting is eligible. Determine whether an agreement, registration, plan, or approval is required for your circumstances, and when it must be in place. Do not infer qualification from a job title or the fact that someone supervises your employment.
Bring a concrete set of details to any unresolved question: the intended license, training phase, setting, supervisor credential, and proposed start date. Confirm the requirement through the responsible authority's instructions. Keep supporting documents with the relationship record so you can later establish which arrangement applied to a period of work.
Distinguish clinical work from its supervision
Keep the underlying activities separate. A clinical-work entry describes what you did and for how long. A supervision entry describes the actual supervision event, including its date, duration, supervisor, and any format distinction needed by the applicable requirements.
Label the two totals clearly. A field called “supervised hours” can mean either clinical work under supervision or time spent in a supervision meeting. If a reporting form includes one category inside a broader total, preserve that relationship without adding the same minutes twice. Keep client names, case narratives, and identifying information out of the hours record.
Prepare a record you can explain later
Check that your record contains these details:
- The dates and actual duration of each activity.
- The activity description and any unresolved reporting classification.
- The site and supervisor relationship active for that work.
- The supervision event's actual duration and relevant format.
- The training phase and any documented approval or agreement boundary.
- The source instructions used for the report.
This list is a recordkeeping suggestion, not a substitute for the state's forms. Add fields when the applicable instructions require them, and keep original activity records available when a reporting conversion changes how a total is displayed.
Review the record before the relationship changes
Agree on a workable review routine with your supervisor, following any required schedule. Reconcile missing events, inconsistent dates, and category questions while both of you can still resolve them. List unresolved issues separately so you can follow up before reporting a total.
Before changing supervisors or leaving a job, identify the verification documents required by your jurisdiction. Prepare accurate date ranges and records for review, preserve the old relationship, and establish the new arrangement separately. A school or employer's approval does not automatically answer a licensing board's requirements.
Common questions
- Is there one supervision-hours target for every LCSW applicant?
- No. Use the exact requirements for the jurisdiction and license you seek, including the qualifying experience, supervision, setting, and documentation conditions.
- Can I assume my MSW placement counts toward postdegree experience?
- No. Keep the phases separate and check the applicable rules before claiming any credit. Similar work does not by itself establish that an earlier phase qualifies.
