One week, one site
Enable JavaScript to use the calculator. The rules it applies are below.
How units work
- One hour of individual or triadic supervision is one unit. Part of an hour counts as part of a unit.
- Two hours of group supervision in the same week is one unit. Group time counts only in whole two-hour units; the remainder does not combine across weeks or sites.
- Supervision at one site does not cover another site's weekly requirement.
- Only supervision in person or by live two-way video is credited.
The weekly requirement
Each week you gain clinical experience at a site needs at least one unit of supervision at that site. For associates, a site where you had more than 10 hours of direct clinical counseling that week needs two units; for ASWs, the 10 hours are clinical diagnosis, assessment and treatment. The MFT trainee rule asks for one unit per site each week.
Other weekly limits
- No more than 6 hours of supervision are credited in a week.
- No more than 40 hours of experience in any 7 consecutive days.
- The associate tracks also require 104 supervised weeks, 52 of them with individual or triadic supervision.
Full figures are on the AMFT to LMFT, APCC to LPCC and ASW to LCSW pages.
Common questions
- What is a supervision unit?
- For California BBS associates and MFT trainees, one hour of individual or triadic supervision is one unit, and two hours of group supervision in the same week is one unit.
- Do leftover group minutes carry over?
- No. Group minutes count only in whole two-hour units within the same week at the same site. Ninety minutes of group supervision is no unit; leftover minutes do not combine with another week or another site.
- When does a site need two units?
- For associates, a site where you had more than 10 hours of direct clinical counseling in the week needs two units there; for ASWs the measure is clinical diagnosis, assessment and treatment. Otherwise each site where you gained clinical experience needs one unit that week.
- Does phone supervision count?
- In the rules Accrue follows for these California tracks, supervision counts when it is in person or by live two-way video. Telephone supervision is not credited.
- Does this calculator decide whether my week counts?
- No. It applies the unit arithmetic to the numbers you enter. Your supervisor's records and the board's review decide.
